What is NAERIC

NAERIC is an acronym for the North American Equine Ranching Information Council. They represent ranchers and horse breeders across North America engaged in collections of Pregnant Mare Urine (PMU).

NAERIC ecompasses horses of many different breeds. Prominent among them, most notably, are Registered Quarter Horses, Paints, Appaloosas, Standardbreds, Draft horses such as Clydesdales, Belgians, and Percherons, and Draft crosses. NAERIC horses are categorized into three different types:

  • Light Horses
  • Draft Horses
  • CanAm Sport Horses: produced by crossing a Thoroughbred stallion to a draft or draft-cross mare

Overall, PMU ranches contribute to a very small portion of the horse population; however they are well know for their high-quality horses which are in demand by horseman of all disciplines throughout North America as well as some foreign countries. Enthusiasts of many equine communities search out NAERIC bred horses for use in their competitive programs.

Owners of NAERIC horses can compete in sanctioned events for prize money. Payouts are matched dollar for dollar and prize money is collected through the NAERIC Advantage program. Events are selected to include a broad range of disciplines and levels of competition. Some of the disciplines receiving payout money from NAERIC Advantage program are:
